The island is best-known as the home of Acadia National Park. The park is famous for its rugged Atlantic shoreline, miles of hiking trails and carriage roads, scenic mountains and fresh water lakes. Since it is connected by bridge to the mainland, access is quick and easy.
Mount Desert Island is also noted for the bustling town of Bar Harbor, with its many varied shops, restaurants and museums.
Our family has vacationed on the island for over 25 years. We started first by camping, then renting cottages. Now we have two places, a three bedroom house (Beech Hill) and a four bedroom house (Hall Quarry). We use both homes and then rent during periods when we are not able to visit the island ourselves.
